This Census of Rabelais Copies reflects the digital revolution in library cataloguing, incorporating a complete rechecking for early Rabelais copies, notably in the Worldcat database. Every copy recorded has been further verified in the catalogues of the individual libraries concerned. Alongside numerous corrections and additions to the 1987 publication, based on excellent bibliographical and more general scholarship, this Census increases the total number of known copies of Rabelais, dated between 1532 and 1626, and in public hands, from about 750 to nearly 1100, of which well over 100 are available for consultation on-line.
Of particular interest are the discovery of nine copies of the Almanach pour l'an 1535 (NRB 095), the discovery of a previously un-recorded edition by Rabelais of Hippocrates's Prognostikon (NRB 109.5), and the re-emergence in Moscow of the Pantagruel of 1533 (NRB 007), with the Chonicques du grant Roy Gargantua (NRB 122) and the Pantagrueline prognostication (NRB 016) previously recorded in Dresden.

Upon the death of Jacopo Antonio Marcello's eight-year-old son Valerio on the first of January 1461, prominent humanists produced consoling letters, essays, and poems. The most important of these writings was the Consolatio ad Iacobum Antonium Marcellum de obitu Valerii filii, written by the Italian humanist Francesco Filelfo (1398-1481). In his Consolatio, Filelfo displays an ambitious synthesis of Greek, Roman, and Christian consolatory themes and combines panegyrics on the boy and his father with a philosophical exposition on the immortality of the soul.
The present volume offers the first modern edition and in-depth study of this remarkable literary work. It is in two parts: first, the critical edition facing the English translation of Filelfo's Consolatio; second, four chapters, which explore the historical context of the Consolatio, its place in the genre of consolation, and its philosophical and rhetorical dimensions.

Focusing on life trajectories that have emerged from a gender-conscious reading of the sources, the contributions illustrate how migration led women to take on roles of responsibility or follow their husbands in their careers as artists, traders and businessmen. They also reveal a widespread literacy that was combined with practical skills and knowledge marked by biological, legal and religious preconceptions; these features permeated the studied communities, where family, religious and patronage ties prevailed upon the dichotomy of public sphere/private sphere. The essays in this book deal with the web of complex social networks that served to sustain the mutual autonomies as well as the strategies of living together. Di quest'opera multiforme e della molteplicità di ruoli che Tasso rivestì - di servitore e consigliere, di padre e sposo, di amante letterario, di uomo di fede - danno conto i diciotto contributi riuniti in questo volume. Si precisa così una biografia contraddistinta da molte zone d'ombra, si analizzano testi, dibattiti e generi letterari, indagando la cultura di questo gentiluomo ed intellettuale laico, formatosi alla scuola dell'estremo umanesimo quattrocentesco e vissuto fra le guerre d'Italia e il concilio di Trento.
